Welcome

The University of Georgia is recognized as one of America’s top public universities in rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report and other national surveys. With students who are on an academic par with those at peer institutions, and a faculty that includes internationally renowned researchers and outstanding teachers, UGA is making its mark as an institution on the fast track to educational excellence.
As the New York Times noted, “Seemingly overnight, one of the South’s largest public universities has become enormously competitive, able to pick and choose among the region’s best high school seniors, insisting on test scores that would have been unimaginably high less than a decade ago.” The Wall Street Journal listed UGA among its “Schools for a New Era” and Kiplinger Magazine cites us as one of the 10 best values among 100 public colleges and universities in America.

Such recognition is the result of a commitment by our students, faculty, staff and administrative team to maintain the University's upward momentum.

Each fall's freshman class sets a new standard for academic quality and preparation. The pressure for admission to UGA is extremely high; for every student enrolled, we have more than three applications. Enrollment--including students at the University's three extended campuses--totals about 33,900.

The University of Georgia annually receives about $140 milion in external research funding and expends about $330 million. Our deep involvement in biomedical research and the statewide cancer initiative, advanced agricultural research and bioterrorism prevention and response enabled UGA to be named a finalist for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility. We also conduct a number of international research programs including critical work on the availability of components for the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction.

UGA received a record $108.3 million in private gifts and pledges in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2006--the first time ever that private giving exceeded $100 million in a single year. The Archway to Excellence fund-raising campaign exceeded its $500 million goal in spring of 2007, more than a year before the drive's scheduled end, ensuring the success of the largest and most ambitious fund-raising effort in UGA history.

If you have not been to the campus lately, please come for a visit. Among the familiar landmarks are some new and exciting buildings that are helping us meet the needs of today’s students and faculty. The $43 million Student Learning Center is having a dramatic impact on the community of learning at UGA. Other recent additions to campus include East Campus Village, with bed space for 1,200 students and a new dining commons; the $40 million Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences; and a large addition to Stegeman Coliseum that provides practice space for men's and women's basketball and women's gymnastics.

The University of Georgia was founded in 1785 as the first public university chartered in America, and more than 220 years later it is one of her best. Thank you for your interest.
